 | Aqaba Reviews | Tips 1 - 10 of 23 | | ... First Trip to Jordan Since our objective for crossing into Jordan via Aqaba was to ultimately reach Petra, we were not all that concerned with spending time in Aqaba (our mistake!). We only needed a place to crash - and to be sure it was clean. Also, we were two women so safety was a big concern. We settled on this hotel and were pleasantly surprised at how very nice it was. The room was clean and it even had a nice view of the bay! The hotel staff was super courteous and attentive and the price was more than reasonable, given the location. In the evening, we were very comfortable to go outside on the main avenue and search out a restaurant for dinner. We were neither hassled nor faced with any strange situations. Everyone was friendly and it was the kind of experience that made me wish I'd been able to spend another day or so in the area - I noticed 4x4 trips to Wadi Rum and these types of activities....sigh. The Alcazar Hotel provides 132 spacious, well-equipped rooms at budget prices. Rooms have air-conditioning, en-suite facilities, satellite TV and balconies. The location is convenient, a mere 5 minute walk from the centre of the resort and surrounded by numerous restaurants and shops. There are 2 restaurants on site, as well as The Dolphin pub, which serves Amstel beer and has a pool table. There is a large swimming pool on the hotel's premises, and there is also a beach club owned by the hotel which is located 15-20 km down the coast. The hotel provides a free shuttle to and from the club. The hotel's staff are helpful and friendly, and numerous trips can be booked from the hotel's reception. There is also a diving school on site - and a significant proportion of the hotel's guests seemed to be divers. The hotel rates are very reasonable, and the price includes a very good breakfast. I have stayed in the Alcazar hotel several times over the last few years and couldn't recommend it highly enough. The Alcazar offers the best of both worlds in terms of location. The hotel itself is less than 5 minutes walk from the centre of town but it also has a private beach club south of the town (which none of the other hotels in Aqaba have) with a free shuttle bus service. Any of the hotels in Aqaba which have direct beach access are about a 20 minute walk from the town centre and are at the top end of the price range (Movenpick, Intercontinental etc.). The staff in the Alcazar are fantastic and you are quickly known by name - not just an anonymous guest. The bedrooms are huge (bigger than some apartments I have been in!) and have satellite TV. The views from the balconies are excellent, particularly the upper floors. The dive centre is properly managed with an emphasis on safety and new equipment which is properly maintained. Nitrox is available to certified divers. The Alcazar may not be the newest or most modern hotel in Aqaba but it's clean, comfortable, the food is good and I often meet the same guests whenever I return and there has to be a good reason for people to return regularly. I would NOT recommend this hotel!!!! We paid in advance for their "best" rooms and even spoke with them on the telephone. When we got there, the rooms were NASTY... especially the bathrooms... don't ask how long it's been since the divet has been cleaned... the linen on the bed wasn't clean and the rooms looked like they were last cleaned in 1920 when the furniture was put in. We complained so they showed us "nicer rooms", ok, they were cleaned in 1960. We were told that they had better rooms (the ones we PAID for) but that none were available. We refused to stay,. (oh and the tv was 5" the beds were twins not doubles as they advertise. ) IF you decide to stay there ask for the best rooms, make sure you get them and be forwarned that it is in a noisy area.
Pool looked nice, it was big, the building looks like it needs to be torn down tho. Opened in Feb 05 at the same location as the Royal Diving Centre. Has all mod cons (pool, restaurant, beach club, bar) but best bit is private beach with a fantastic reef feet from the shore. Great for novice snorkellers and experienced diver alike. Much better than in town as no pollution and you can get some peace. Worth stayer here and just getting a taxi into town for some bargain shopping.
Beach and reef - saw lion fish, loads of parrot fish and an octopus all in my first day and I was just off their jetty!
